XIV Summer school on Economics and Philosophy

Experiments in Economics, Experiments in Philosophy
San Sebastian, July 27-29 (2011)

XIV Summer school on Economics and Philosophy. Organized by the University of the Basque Country and the Urrutia Elejalde Foundation.
Coordinators: Cristina Bicchieri (UPenn), Jason Dana (UPenn), María Jiménez Buedo (UNED)
Convenor: Alfonso Dubois (UPV/EHU)
http://www.urrutiaelejalde.org/SummerSchool/2011.html
1. Aims and scope
Since 1998 the Urrutia Elejalde Foundation has annually organized a Summer School on frontier topics between philosophy and economics and other social sciences, bringing together scholars from all these fields to explore them. The aim of this year Summer School is to explore the potential avenues for collaboration between the growing disciplines of experimental economics and experimental philosophy. Experimental economics has evolved into a thriving subfield, as attested by the number of experimental papers published in leading general economics journals. This growing enthusiasm for experiments in economics has coincided with the revival of philosophical and methodological analyses of causality, which view the controlled experiment as the privileged gate to causal inference. But more importantly, in the last years, a new field known as experimental philosophy has set out to complement or even substitute for pre-theoretical intuitions regarding philosophical themes such as moral dilemmas or rationality. At a moment in which experimental economics is already well-established and experimental philosophy is emerging, this meeting compares their main themes and results.
2. Preliminary list of speakers
Nicholas BARDSLEY (University of Reading), Giorgio CORICELLI (CNRS, Institut des Sciences Cognitives, Lyon), Francesco GUALA (Univ. di Milano),Nagore IRIBERRI (U. Pompeu Fabra), Joshua KNOBE (Yale University), Shaun NICHOLS (U. Arizona), Daniel ZIZZO (University of East Anglia), Cristina BICCHIERI (UPenn), Jason DANA (UPenn),
3. Call for papers
We encourage submission of papers that cover one or more of the above areas. The scientific committee will consider a number of submissions by young scholars at graduate or postgraduate level. The Foundation will cover the registration fees and accommodation expenses of the authors. Please send a pdf abstract of no more than 500 words to philandecon@gmail.com by April 7th. A decision will be made by April 15th.
4.Registration
The School also considers applications from those wishing to attend without presenting a paper. The registration period opens up at a later date, by which those who have expressed interest in only attending will be notified. Places are limited and preference is given to presenters.

11th annual Summer Institute for the Preservation of the History of Economics

The 11th annual Summer Institute for the Preservation of the History of Economics will be held at the University of Richmond, June 20-23rd, 2010. The Institute offers a forum for graduate students and distinguished scholars to present work in progress or more polished papers to a lively audience. Our mission is to help young scholars connect in a workshop setting with young and eminent scholars in the field. Past speakers include Brad Bateman, Mauro Boianovsky, Marcel Boumans, James Buchanan, Dave Colander, Evelyn Forget, Dan Hammond, Samuel Hollander, Kevin Hoover, M. Ali Khan, Anthony Laden, David Levy, Deirdre McCloskey, Steve Medema, Phil Mirowski, Leon Montes, Mary Morgan, Maria Pia Paganelli, Sandra Peart, Malcolm Rutherford, Warren Samuels, Eric Schliesser, Gordon Tullock, Anthony Waterman, and Roy Weintraub.
For the 2010 session, we invite proposals on any topic. We are always looking for new participants and invite recommendations and submissions from any and all interested parties. With participation by Steven Durlauf and Ali Khan, we anticipate organizing a session on the state of economic science in the light of the recent financial crisis.
Papers on the concerns of Henry Simons and the Ordo Liberal school about the stability of capitalism would be of particular interest. It will be, one might note, the 100th anniversary of the publication of Wicksteed's Common Sense of Political Economy.
As in past years, we anticipate that the Institute will be supported by funding for modest honoraria. Participation by upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in economics or related disciplines will also be encouraged. The History of Economics Society assists with conference expenses for students. Conference events include good coffee (we aim to improve) and continental breakfasts, lunches, as well as one or two working dinners. Details about travel, housing and other matters will be posted early in 2010.
Please send expressions of interest, topics of interest, paper proposals or queries to: Sandra J. Peart, Dean, Jepson School of Leadership Studies, speart@richmond.edu and David M. Levy, Professor of Economics, George Mason University, DavidMLevy@gmail.com.

Summer School on Structural Change: Analyses, Experiences and Methodologies

Summer School on Structural Change: Analyses, Experiences and Methodologies
3-16 June 2009

Application deadline: 8TH May 2009
Over the last few years the international debate on economic policies, and especially on development policies, witnessed the emergence of views alternative to the Washington consensus. The current economic events at the world level – people are more worried about deflation than inflation, industrialists are asking the governments to spend more rather than less, etc. – make a full understanding of such
alternative views more needed than ever.
The Summer School is organized in two parts. The first aims at providing participants with a good knowledge of the main theories belonging to the tradition of the so called “heterodox economics”, which constitute the intellectual background of the alternative views mentioned before. The second part aims at providing participants with the technical skills needed to build the so called heterodox Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) models, an analytical tool through which the above mentioned views may be translated into concrete calculations on the likely effects of different sets of alternative economic policies.
Location: Faculty of Economics, University of Pavia, Via San Felice 7, 27100 Pavia – Italy
Organized by the Cooperation and Development Network (CDN) in collaboration with the University of Pavia, the Institute for Advanced Study of Pavia (IUSS) and the University of Insubria.
For further information regarding the organization of the Summer School please refer to: Alberto Botta (albertobotta@hotmail.com) and/or Francesca Montagna Napoleone (cdn@unipv.it), Development School: c/o Collegio Santa Caterina, Via San Martino 17/A, 27100 Pavia – IT.
