Wednesday March 30
Richard Bradley (London School of Economics)
Hypothetical Reasoning in Decision Making
Venue: Economics Dept, Bocconi University, Via Röntgen 1, Milan, 5th floor, room E4-SR04
ABSTRACT:
Human decision makers make their choices not just in the light of what they believe and desire to the case, but also with reference to what is or would be the case were certain conditions ful…lled or actions performed. The topic of this paper is the nature of the hypothetical reasoning that characterises such prospective agency. In particular I introudce a model in which the di¤erences between factual and counterfactual supposition can be explored and the respective claims of evidential and causal decision theory examined.
MicroCafé is a series of seminars devoted to historical and philosophical research in the foundations of microeconomics. Participation is open to all scholars interested in these topics. Papers are circulated in advance.
Seminars take place on Wednesday between 5.00-6.30 PM either at Bocconi University
or at the University of Milan.
After the seminar, participants are invited to an informal “happy hour” discussion.
