First Conference of the Caribbean Economic History Association - Call for papers

FIRST CONFERENCE CARIBBEAN ECONOMIC HISTORY ASSOCIATION (AHEC)

Call for sessions and papers
1. On February the 5th, 2010, a group of historians formed a new Association named “Caribbean Economic History Association” (AHEC) at the Second Latin American Economic History Congress.
2. The statutes of the Association establish as its objective to create a forum of academic discussion between historians of the economy and economists of the world studying the history of the Caribbean region, including both its islands and continental territories.
3. A provisional committee of 10 members governs the Association. The Association has links with all the economic history associations of the region and the Iberian world.
4. The Association will host its first Congress on November 3-5, 2011, in the city of Santa Marta, Colombia. The Magdalena University will sponsor the event. The Congress venue will be the Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino, and the plenary session will be held at the Banco de la República office.
5. The Congress theme will be
«STABILITY, INSTABILITY AND PROGRESS IN THE CARIBBEAN»(16th-20th CENTURIES)
6. The Association asks presidents of economic history associations to help in the organization of this event, and requests all researchers interested in the economic history of the Caribbean to participate with an unpublished paper in the following sessions:
Production systems, economic agents, forms of labour and wages (economic systems, types of economies, productive structures, labour regimes; population and labour force; firms and entrepreneurs)
Production and exportation of raw materials (main aspects of production and services throughout the history of the Caribbean)
International trade (external trade and other links to the international economy)
Banks and financial systems (saving and credit banks, credit societies, cooperatives)
External debt, foreign direct investment, remittances, public finance, and the role of the State
Economic thought and economic historiography (influence of classical authors and reception of their thought in the Caribbean; economists in the Caribbean)
Exploitation of natural resources; historical forms and environmental impact
Industry and Tourism
7. The deadline to send session proposals and paper abstracts ends on March 15th, 2011. Participants may suggest other research topics not included in the list and they can also suggest other sessions and invite possible participants. Proposals may be collective (but should include topics and participants) or individual (in this case, the organization will include the paper within a session in the program). Proposals will include a short description of their content (100-150 words). In April 2011, the organization will publish the list of approved sessions and papers and the program of the Congress.

9. Future communiqués will provide information for participants coming from Latin America and the Caribbean concerning flights, accommodation, transport, etc. In some cases, sponsors will provide special conditions and discounts.
10. During the Congress, the Association will celebrate its Assembly to elect a new executive committee and establish the bases of its future performance (membership, institutional supports and funding).
11. With the payment of the registration fee, participants will have provisional membership to the Association, and this will be confirmed between the opening of the Congress and the Assembly. The congress and membership fees will be 50 USD for researchers and 25 USD for students. Payment will be collected through PayPal until September 30th, 2011.
